Note
|
Edward Fuller b. c1862 son of Ralph Fuller Esq. Solicitor of Skibbereen. Current thinking is that he left Ireland some time after 1878.It appears that his mother Dora and father Ralph had both passed away by by that date. Family stories state that he was advised to go to sea because of health problems, fever and ague, and trained as a ships navigator, and sailed into Chesapeake Bay at some point. There is also mention of the port of Aden but this is vague. The photograph (right) seems to have been taken in Bristol, date unknown but possibly c1880. Could this be the occasion of his embarkation? Did he train in Bristol, a city with a strong maritime history? Edward spent some time in Australia, possibly before he came to New Zealand and spoke of "living up in Hay", "where you could hear the grass grow" and where "a lettuce he grew and entered in a competition was so huge that it was put in the cabbage section by mistake". His brother Ralph Fuller, older by two years, may have left Ireland before Edward and seems to have been already living in Dunedin, New Zealand, when Edward arrived, possibly around 1884 when census records find him running a coal and firewood business with his brother in Dunedin. Ralph had married Alice Newman in New Zealand in 1881. OTAGO NOMINAL INDEX |
